The SAT assesses the critical thinking skills students need for academic success in college-skills that students learned in high school. |  | | Who Should Take the SAT Test? | The SAT is the nation's most widely used college admissions test, a distinction that it has held for more than seven decades. The SAT is taken by more than two million students every year and is accepted by virtually all colleges and universities. The SAT measures knowledge of subjects learned in the classroom, including reading, writing, and math, and how well you can apply that knowledge outside of the classroom. The SAT helps colleges get to know you better by giving them insight into how you think, solve problems,and communicate. |  | | The Test has Three Sections |  |  |  | | 1. Critical Reading Section | The critical reading section, formerly known as the verbal section, includes short as well as long reading passages. Questions can be based on one, or sometimes two, reading passages. Some questions are not based on reading passages, but ask you to complete sentences. This section includes Reading Comprehension, Sentence Completions and Paragraph-length Critical Reading. The total time duration for this section is 70 minutes. |  | | 2. Mathematics Section | The SAT includes mathematics topics from up through a third-year college preparatory course, such as exponential growth, absolute value, and functional notation. It also places emphasis on such topics as linear functions, manipulations with exponents, and properties of tangent lines. Important skills such as estimation and number sense are measured through the multiple-choice and student response (grid-in)questions. This section includes Algebra and functions, Geometry Statistics andProbability and Data Analysis. You need to complete the entire Mathssection within 70 minutes. |  | | 3. Writing Section | The writing section includes both multiple-choice questions and a direct writing measure in the form of an essay. It also measures your ability to improve sentences and paragraphs and also identify errors. You are allowed a maximum of 35 minutes to complete the MCQs and 25minutes to complete the Essay.
