The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized examination for all the graduate school candidates (Except Management). The GRE Revised General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in eight specific fields of study and can help forecast a candidate's potential for success in graduate school.

Examination Body:

GRE Revised Test is conducted by the Education Testing Service (ETS).

Website: www.ets.org

Why GRE Test?

Any accredited graduate, business or professional school, or any department or division within a school, may require or recommend that its applicants take the General Test, a Subject Test, or both. The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study.

Who Should Take the GRE Test?

Prospective graduate applicants take the General Test. GRE test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. The scores provide common measures for comparing qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating grades and recommendations.

About the GRE Test

The GRE revised General test since August 2011 is available in 2 formats: A computer based test & a paper based test. In India, the test is only computer based.

The computers based test is partly computer adaptive. This term means that at certain points in the test, the computer decides what questions to give you based on your performance thus for within each section, however the test is not computer adaptive.

Here are the changes that give you a better test experience:

  • New preview and review capabilities within a section
  • New "mark and review" feature to tag questions, so you can skip and return later

  • New questions that better reflect the skills you'll need for graduate and business school
  • New answer formats, including tasks such as numeric entry and highlighting a sentence in a passage to answer a question
  • Less reliance on vocabulary out of context, more emphasis on reading and no antonyms or analogies
  • New on-screen calculator for the Quantitative Reasoning section
